One of two new late-night releases from the Toronto songwriter.
After releasing “Damn” and “Break Me Down” earlier this week, PartyNextDoor has shared a pair of new tracks early Sunday morning. The first, “Put It On Silent,” is a moody, rap-influenced cut that finds him using a rhythmic cadence that falls somewhere between Future and Young Thug on the verses. He quickly opens up the melodies once the first hook hits, laying some catchy quotables over self-production. “You’re gonna put the silence on your phone ’cause you know,” he sings, advising the woman he’s with not to answer calls from her boyfriend. It’s the reverse scenario from his recent track “Low Battery,” in which he texts his girl looking for answers: “Everybody lie, but did you lie with someone else?”
That track came off PND’s Colours 2 EP, released in May. On top of the solo releases we’ve heard from the OVO songwriter this year, he has also appeared as a feature on some radio singles: Major Lazer’s “Run Up” alongside Nicki Minaj, and Zayn’s “Still Got Time.” This fall, he’s heading out on tour with Halsey and Charli XCX, which should open him up to the pop market even more. After cowriting Rihanna’s “Work” and “Sex With me” in 2016, its clear that he has a grip on penning a hit.
Party’s last official album was 2016’s PND3. There has been no news on when a follow-up could arrive, but given his recent prolific output, it seems he’s been writing and recording regularly in the interim between albums. Of course, the release will likely depend on which other projects are being released by OVO this year. Whether or not the album arrives, we’re expecting to hear more from Party very soon.
